Mask Structure
In Hong Kong, we usually use surgical masks with three layers.
First Layer – waterproof and prevent droplets penetration
Second Layer – bacterial filtration and barrier
Third Layer – absorbs moisture released by the mask user
Material of Surgical Mask
The materials of three layer masks are different, and each layer weights around 25gm2. Materials that are too light may affect the filtration effect, while materials that are too heavy may cause breathing difficulty to users.
In general, meltblown nonwoven fabric is used in the middle layer of the mask. Meltblown is the name of the raw material whereas non-woven fabric is a weaving method. Non-woven fabric achieves better filtration effect than woven fabric.
